This “Christus Rex” (Christ the King) hangs in my father-in-law’s church in Newburgh, NY. It was a gift to a retiring pastor, and is an enlargement in basswood of a small ivory piece that he had brought back from Germany when he was stationed there as a serviceman. The figure is about three feet tall.
I myself am a Christian and am a minister by training, and I recognize that the gifts I have, both as a teacher of the Bible and as an artist, are from the Lord Jesus Christ, who saved my life some 37 years ago. Since I carved this piece I have made a promise to the Lord that I will carve Christus Rex and Christus Victor (Victorious Christ) and similar inspirational artworks that honor Christ and our Father in Heaven, but I will not carve crucifixes, because my Lord has risen and is no longer on the cross. Jesus Christ has risen indeed!
