I am not really a “Chainsaw Carver”. I have discovered that
though I start out with a chainsaw, my years of high detail
carving with gouges and other specialized tools have made
it next to impossible for me to achieve the level of detail that
satisfies my eye using the chainsaw alone.
So I call myself a chainsaw sculptor or somesuch. Here are a couple of pieces of such work. The bear is what is left of 700 board feet of red oak, and is the first bear I have done. The whole piece is about 9’ tall. The Scottish Golfer stands about 11’ tall from the ground and is carved from a standing trunk of White Ash that overlooks a golf course. In addition to using a Husqvarna 450 and a Stihl MS200T, I used my Arbortech rotary carvers and my Automach recipro-cating carving tool on these pieces.
