Among my greatest pleasures is the creation of coats-of-arms because nowhere else is the beauty of traditional carving better displayed nor color and creativity more uniquely expressed than in heraldry and the language of blazonry. Each shield and family or clan device is one-of-a-kind, and some can be extravagantly imaginative, mysterious,… even haunting. Each speaks of heritage and of roots and of blood and of ancient bonds. All ought to be created as heirlooms: Cherished investments to be passed down with pride for generations to come.
Here are pictures of four of my best. The two monumental pieces I consider my finest work. They are each five feet across and almost ten inches deep at their deepest. They are the arms of the Lord and the Lady of the manor, both of whom are gracious and very distinguished Americans who have spent much of their lives in service to the nation. They are both awarded arms dating back many centuries, but the presentations are my original interpretations. They grace the two arched entries to the Great Room of a Virginia country estate. Each is sculpted from a single glued-up construction of linden/basswood with Honduras mahogany added for strength where necessary. Each took over six months of creative time to execute. I would let them stand with some pride against any comparable carving in Europe.
The framed “Edwards” piece, while much smaller (about 25″ x 20″), is still a beautiful and refined carving, worked in cherry. The arms are hereditary. The design is mine. It is displayed in an alcove in a private home outside of Washington, DC.
The large shield is over the main doors to the student hall of Gordon-Conwell’s School of Theology outside of Boston. It is the logo of the school.
Family coats-of-arms are personal. It is easy enough to find “your coat of arms”, on paper or even “carved and painted”, on the Internet, but these are not going to be what I offer. If you supply me with your chosen artwork, I will work with you to create a unique expression of your device that will rival the finest armorials in the manors and castles of Britain or the Continent, if this is what you are seeking. I can also render simpler and smaller designs as you might desire. I can also create a completely original coat-of-arms for you, if this is what you would prefer. Please connect with me with your thoughts.
