  1. Monumental Cherry and Mahogany Fireplace Surround: This monumental cherry and mahogany surround is in a two-story paneled library in a home on the Connecticut shore near Darien. The shelf of the mantel is fully nine feet long, to give you an idea of the scale. The two stylized eagles are carved in-the-round of Honduras mahogany and stand 30″ tall. The design is my own, but is reflective of a surround once seen by the client in an old Federal office building in DC.

  2. Red Oak and Sassafras Fireplace Surround: This is a surround of my own design crafted in red oak with sassafras appointments.

  3. Custom Designed Fireplace Surround with Intaglio Carved Detailing: This is a surround of my own design. The carving is worked “intaglio” or “buttermold”, a reverse shadow technique of incised carving.

  4. Handcrafted Federal Fireplace Surround: I personally have always preferred the cleaner lines of the colonial and Federal designs rather than the overdone ostentation of the British and the Europeans from which the young and more pragmatic America was fairly deliberately seeking to distance itself. This surround is another one of my own designs.

  5. Exquisite Example of Period American Mantel Design: This little surround was made as a “showpiece” for a display at a big home and garden show I once did. The design is my own. I made the mantelpiece out of scrapwood that was in the shop at the time. I call the design “Jonathan Poore”.
